Why So Much Fish Oil News?

July 11th, 2010
Tony Tucker asked:

Fish oil news reports and articles seem to be cropping up more and more it seems. Is there a health message to all of this and should we be paying more attention?

The bulk of what appears seems to be one study after another into how they have helped in a wide range of health areas from heart disease to pregnancy and even some cancers. Modern medical science is very good at treatments most of the time but, we often overlook what mother nature can provide.

Maybe we ought to focus on better preventative measures that could cut the risks of catching or developing some of these serious health conditions in the future. If fish oil is said by many to be so beneficial to our health then we should be trying to include it more in our daily diet, through fresh oily fish or by dietary supplements.

It’s no secret that in general we’re eating less fish than maybe previous generations for a variety of reasons, but like anything else, if you want to take up the health benefits of fish oils you have to take action and make that effort.

Change your shopping habit’s and stop by the fish counter in your local shop or market, or seek out a quality fish oil pill or capsule.

There’s plenty brands out there but please don’t just grab the first one you see as you could be doing your health a disservice. That’s because quality can affect how well those nutrients are delivered to where they work best.

International Medical Cover – Avail at the Earliest

July 3rd, 2010
Darlene Kaitlin asked:

One of the problems faced by the modern times is the continuously rising prices of essential commodities. So much so that a stage today has come when one cannot think of purchasing any item without giving it a fair deal of thought. Imagine in this scenario what happens to families who are forced to cough up money they are not prepared for. And if the expense is such, which cannot be overlooked, then the situation really goes out of hand. Serious illnesses are one reason, which can serve the case of a classic example of expenses that fall under this category. The rises of such a reason is bad enough, but imagine a situation when a family does not have enough money to get one of its members treated.

It is here that sickness insurance comes for one’s rescue and ensures that family is not short of finances to get its member treated, and that too without any contribution from them. The popularity of such a service, therefore, can easily be understood. It after all is a service that comes to ones rescue at times when one needs it the most. What, however should not be forgotten is the fact that one requires such a service at a time when one is abroad. This is the time when one is away from one’s near and dear ones so the need of help is most needed then.

It is with the intention of helping out such people that the idea of international medical cover was conceived. It ensures that people who are living in foreign country can get the benefit of medical insurance, thereby solving there problem of not being able to arrange for finance at the time most needed.

Needless to say that such a service as international medical cover is a boon for expatriates and goes a long way in helping them at times when they need help the most.

Rise of such a reason is bad enough, but imagine. The rises of such a reason is bad enough, but imagine a situation when a family does not have.

What are the prerequisites for the Radiologic Technologist Program in Pima Medical Institute & Apollo College?

May 29th, 2010
Jimmy L asked:

I am planning on relocating to Arizona and am interested in the Radiologic Tech field. I am currently taking Pre-requisites to get into the Pasadena City College and was wondering if it was the same pre-requisites as the other colleges.

The Pima Medical Institute I am referring to is the one in Mesa, AZ. The Apollo College I am referring to is the campus in Westside Phoenix, AZ.

I was wondering if any of those accept FAFSA, also.

And are either of those nationally accredited?

Latest Medical Heart News

April 18th, 2010
Alex Fir asked:

Heart research is constantly evolving. Read the latest news about what you can do or what you should not do for your heart.

- Canadian researchers discovered that people who return to a stressful job after a heart attack are more likely to have a second attack than those without high levels of job stress. About 1000 people were looked at by the researchers. In 6 years, over 200 of the patients suffered heart problems again.

- According to researchers at University College London, unhappy relationships are bad for the heart. Scientists found that people who do not have emotional support and understanding from their partner, have a 34% increased risk of heart disease than those in happy relationships.

- Subclinical hypothyroidism (mildly underactive thyroid) can increase risk of heart failure. According to a new study, people with the condition are twice as likely to have heart failure compared to those who have normally functioning thyroids.

- Among people who experienced a heart attack and later developed depression, a lack of response to antidepressant treatment suggests a high risk of another cardiac incident. It was discovered that the non-responders to treatment were nearly 3 times more likely to experience a new cardiovascular episode compared with the untreated patients.

- Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Medical School found what popular weight loss programs are good in promoting heart health. They discovered that the Ornish diet is the best one for your heart, Weight Watchers is second, while Atkins is last.

- Massachusetts General Hospital researchers found a link between panic and heart attacks. They found that older women who reported one full-blown panic attack during a 6 month period were 3 times more likely to have a heart attack or stroke over the next 5 years than those who didn’t report a panic attack.

- Researchers from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine found that fatty foods cooked at high temperatures can cause a significant dysfunction in blood vessel dilation. As a result, a heart disease can take place.

- Taking large doses of calcium supplements can increase the risk of heart attacks in older women. A University of Auckland study found that the calcium supplements may increase the chance of a heart attack by up to 40 percent in women over 70.

- Onions are rich in compounds that protect people from heart disease. Onions and other plants of the allium family (leeks, shallots, and scallions), contain compounds that help lower cholesterol, thin the blood, and prevent hardening of the arteries. All these things can cause heart disease.

- Getting out of bed before 5 a.m. is bad for the health of your heart. Japanese researchers found that early-risers are at a higher risk for developing heart problems, such as hypertension, strokes and hardening of the arteries.

Your Questions Answered About Medical Transcription Equipment – What Do You Need to Have?

February 11th, 2010
Susan B. Eliot asked:

Student medical transcriptionists and beginner MTs often want to know what type of equipment they need to buy in order to start transcribing. They are specifically concerned about having the correct equipment on hand before they start to take on their own accounts. The worry is that they won’t have all the equipment necessary and therefore will not get the account.

I remember that being the basis of my biggest fear when I tried to get my first account. I was afraid that I wouldn’t know what equipment to even suggest if the doctor was using an extremely outdated tape system and asked me what she should be using. It’s laughable to me now: First, with most doctors’ offices you may never deal directly with the doctor. Ordinarily it will be the office manager who you will interact with. Second, it is easy to find great digital equipment online. It takes very little time to learn how to use it. Third, the majority of offices already have a system in place, and they’ll explain how it works, not the other way around. If they don’t know how, you can be the hero by studying the manual online and then demonstrating how to use their own equipment. It is really not that difficult.

I strongly recommend that you wait until you land your first job or client before you run out and buy any equipment, other than what you need for your training. Some doctors in smaller offices surprisingly still use micro cassettes while others use small handheld digital recorders and will send all files to you over the Internet.

Even knowing the above, you still probably want to know what basic medical transcription equipment consists of, so let’s look at that next.

First, you obviously will need a computer! What kind of computer depends on many things. I am often asked by people who want to become MTs if they can use their Apple Mac computers. Usually the answer is no, but there are a few exceptions. If you end up working for a large national transcription company, an Apple computer will not be compatible with their software. However, if you decide to only have your own accounts and take on work from local doctors you may be able to use your Mac computer. You can use the word processing software that your doctor’s office prefers on your Mac (usually Microsoft Word), so that’s not a problem at all. But what do you need to know the foot pedal and the playback software that you’ll need to hear the digital recording? Great news there:

For the last several years all Mac computers have been made with Intel processors. This means that your Mac can work on a Windows operating system as well as with your regular OS X software. You should have special software that allows you to go back and forth between the two operating systems, but once it’s installed it’s quite easy to do this. This means that you can buy any foot pedal or digital dictation software that would work on a regular PC and have it work just fine on your Mac, too!

In addition, as Macs are becoming more popular, there are also foot pedals and digital dictation software designed to work on either Macs or PCs.

In addition to the above, there are other forms of medical transcription equipment that you should know about. A good headset is the one of the most crucial pieces of equipment you will buy. It needs to be comfortable, have great volume control, and be simple and fast to replace. A quick search online will turn up dozens of choices with many reviews.

New MTs will often hear the term “C-phone” and wonder what that piece of equipment does. It is just a digital receiver/phone that accesses digital dictation over a phone line. These are becoming less common as digital dictation is so simple to transfer over the Internet, but you still will see job openings from time to time state that you need to have this equipment. Don’t buy it until you get the job, though, as you may not need it anywhere else! This is true for just about every piece of medical transcription equipment. Many transcription companies and hospitals will provide you with a computer, foot pedal, and even headset if you are an employee. Don’t make a huge investment in equipment until you know what you will need in your first position. You have plenty of time to get all that you will eventually need.

When Is Eyelid Surgery Medically Necessary?

February 1st, 2010
Skip Freedman asked:

Last year almost 250,000 people in the United States underwent eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty. Because aging causes the skin around the eye to sag, blepharoplasty has risen to become one of the most sought-after plastic surgery procedures for patients over the age of 35. The extremely thin skin making up the eyelids starts to lose its elasticity and stretch, and it’s largely a hereditary condition. If your siblings and parents have saggy eyelids, you probably do as well.

Usually the removal of excess skin and fat from the eyelids is performed for cosmetic reasons. However, upper blepharoplasty can be medically necessary when the excess skin covers the eyelid margin or deflects the eyelashes downward, impairing the patient’s vision.

To ensure that upper eyelid surgery is a medical necessity rather than a cosmetic condition, case managers should consider having the patient take good, high resolution photographs of the eye region. If the upper eyelid margin of the eye crosses the plain of pupil in the photo, then further testing can be done. An ophthalmologist can run a visual field mapping test on the patient. If the patient’s visual interference with upper case letters is at 20 percent above horizon, and if taping the patient’s eyelids back improves his or her vision 20 degrees above the horizon, then the treatment probably is required.

This, along with a documented patient medical chart showing a long standing visual issue, are strong indicators to the case manager that upper eyelid surgery is a medical necessity.

Is listing a medical school as your first choice a good idea?

January 18th, 2010
ChemE-Kaun asked:

I plan to apply to all medical schools in my state and take whatever I can get. Some early decision programs require that you list their school as your first choice on your AMACS application. Will other medical schools know that you chose another school first? Will this affect your ability to get into another medical school if they see that you have chosen another school over theirs?
